Ingredients
5 liters of red wine 9 pints
1 liter of eau-de-vie 1 3/4 pints
24 wet walnuts, shelled kernels, pounded 24
1 kilogram of sugar 2 to 2 1/2 pounds
1 vanilla pod 1
1 nutmeg, grated 1
6 cloves 6
(Wet walnuts are the mature nuts, freshly picked from the tree)
Directions
Put the nuts, wine, eau-de-vie, sugar and spices into a large bottle. Cork the bottle loosely and leave the mixture to macerate for 40 days. Strain the mixture through a double layer of dampened muslin, pour it into bottles and cork the bottles carefully. Store in a cool place.
